character information
Name: Johnen "John" Egbert
Appearance: Similar to canon, only trollified, with asymmetrical horns that match his windy symbol.
History: In this AU, SGRUB was never played and Earth was never created by the trolls. Events prior to the game are still as they were; Tavros was crippled, Terezi was blinded, Aradia was killed and received the robot body from Equius. They all grew up (except Aradia), and their lives progressed on Alternia and beyond.
Karkat went into hiding when his eyes started changing color. He forced Gamzee through something of an intervention to get him off the slime after starting to worry for his friend's health and ended up heavily scarred for his trouble (not to mention having to deal with a few dead neighbors). They are moirails now and pretty much attached at the hip. Karkat has been slowly bringing everyone back together and is following in his ancestor's footsteps with hopes of changing the way things are, but rather than an all out rebellion he's planning on doing things more covert this time around.
As a highblood, Gamzee was taken with others from his class and dropped off on a particularly violent and harsh planet, then left there to survive as the initiation into becoming a Subjugglator. There he found a book bound in skin and written in all colors of blood, bearing his symbol. It had belonged to The Grand Highblood and left there for 'the right young troll to find.' It taught him ways to use Subjugglator voodoo in ways that pretty much broke the established system. After returning to Karkat, he used what he learned to rip out the chuckle voodoos implanted in those that have regathered, freeing them of that innate fear of going against the monarchy, paving way for this secret rebellion to actually take place.
Karkat's plans are still in their infancy at this point, focusing on gathering trusted comrades. The plan is actually fairly simple at it's core. "Keep Feferi alive to take the Empress' place."
So where does John fit in all this? Well, like in canon John is from the future of a world that Karkat created. It just happens to still be Alternia rather than Earth. The rebellion had won and Feferi became the Empress, and is still the empress. Due to the longevity of higher blooded trolls, there are still those that remember the overtaking and still want things to go back the way they were. There are still many strong believers the caste system, but by the time John was hatched it wasn't nearly as wide spread as it had been. The war against the universe had been stopped, but the repercussions of it will be felt for countless centuries still. It is also no longer an absolute requirement to have sex and produce genetic material. The drones won't kill anyone who doesn't have any to offer. So without the pressure of finding a matesprit or kismesis, moirailegence has become the most important quadrant to fill in hopes of keeping the still warlike race from turning on itself.
John grew up in a decent area with a rather peculiar lusus and always kept in close contact with his good friends Dave, Jade, and Rose. Since society's transitioning was generally slow, and along with the fact that most of the adult trolls still preferred to be out in space, children still held the greater population of Alternia. When John was around 6 sweeps an adult moved into a nearby lawnring, so of course John had to go over and make a nuisance of himself. It's a wonder he didn't get himself culled.
As sweeps went on, John started noticing odd things happening around his adult neighbor's hive, and he was convinced it was something paranormal. At least things he thought was weird, everyone else thought he was being paranoid and silly. There were strange sounds at all hours of the day, and since his hive was closest it made it hard for him to sleep some days. More and more his neighbor started to get Carapace visitors from a moon called Derse, one of which was called Jack Noir. The most he could figure out was that they were building something, he just had no clue what it was.
Something paranormal. Clearly.
On his 9th wriggling day, he invited Rose, Dave, and Jade over to cheer him up. Wriggling days are a time troll's tend to lament their insufficiencies, and he just didn't feel like being in a bad mood. In an effort to uphold said desired cheer, Rose had knitted John an incredibly gaudy, rainbow stripped scarf as a joke. John of course immediately puts it on and has been wearing it unironically ever since. Eventually, John starts going on about his creepy adult neighbor (which Jade thought was silly to say since John was technically an adult too now), and Dave decides that they were all going to check out what was going on to finally free John of his unhealthy obsession with something that was definitely nothing.
Shenanigans happen, and of course things never go as planned since it was definitely a something that was NOT nothing. His neighbor and Carapace compatriots managed to build/grow a combo sylladex-space-time machine they called the TARDEX and planned to go back and time and stop the rebellion from ever happening. The four friends call bullshit on this plan and initiate an attempted STRIFE against the group. Being woefully outmatched, they ABSCOND into the TARDEX -which is much bigger on the inside, accidentally trigger the activation cardkey that hurled them through time and space.
They end up back in time, not on Alternia but Derse, where Karkat and his crew supposedly had dealings with The Midnight Crew. It just so happened that Karkat, Gamzee, Tavros, and Equius were there seeking medical attention since Equius had recently lost a leg. Gamzee actually saw the TARDEX appear, and accidentally scared the crap out of John when he opened the door and slammed it back in the Subjugglator's face. Karkat was more ready to think Gamzee had slipped and was dabbling with slime again than believe he actually saw a giant room inside of a random blue wardrobe.
At least, not until after a chance meeting where and argument between John and Karkat boils over into an unfortunate incident involving some imperial Dersite guards where they ended all up running for their, lives and right back into the TARDEX. Jade ends up taking control of the space machine aspect of it (and eventually Dave will take control of the time machine aspect) and moves them somewhere safe.
It takes John and crew a good while to realize that Karkat and his group of outcasts are actually the ones who bring about the change in the troll civilization, since their real names and personal trollian handles were never made known to the public, only the alternate ones they used as code names. Karkat is actually someone John grew up admiring, and firmly believes in everything he preached/will preach about.
Personality: Troll John Egbert is in many ways just like his canon counterpart. He's a prankster who considers himself the prankiest of pranksters what ever done pranked in all prank kind. Unfortunately, he is actually rather mediocre and doesn't have a very wide repertoire when it comes to pranking shenanigans. Even his lusus tends to be able to out prank him at any given time. It doesn't stop him though, and enjoys a good laugh whenever possible.
Above all things, John is a well meaning, spirited troll with a love for absolutely horrible movies (he doesn't love them because they're horrible, he loves them because he genuinely thinks they're gods gift to cinema) and an almost disturbing obsession with Troll Nicolas Cage. Friendship is his strength and he keeps the connections he forges with the people he meets as something near and dear to his heart. When it comes to his friends, he seems to have this never ending fount of forgiveness, and will always exhaust every reason and thought to give the benefit of the doubt.
He is the epitome of optimistic, upbeat and usually always smiling. He can be a lazy daydreamer and will slack off from time to time. He has a healthy dose of competitiveness but he knows when to play and when to fight, and can be serious when he has to be. He can be downright obstinate about certain things, like protecting people or staying true to his own feelings. No matter what, he never gives up and will always encourage others to do the same.
John is simple minded and easily accepting, if not a bit naive when it comes to things outside of friends and what he instinctively knows as right or wrong. He can be almost ridiculously oblivious to things others would notice in a heartbeat. Not to say that he's completely dimwitted, thought at times he might come off that way. He's just exceedingly curious and isn't the type to jump to immediate conclusions about a great many things.
He's not what one would call leader material, despite the fact that he apparently crashed face first into the roll . At least when it comes to the temporally displaced group. He makes his own decisions -not all of them good- and walks his own path, but a lot of the time he's guided in certain directions by the people around him. He has no problems with authority and takes orders from people more skilled in such things. Tactically he's all over the place, and that's evident in the way he fights. His strategy tends to be "smash everything, ask questions later". He doesn't actually like to be considered a leader who gives out commands. He'd rather be a friend making suggestions.
Despite all that, John isn't all smiles and friendship speeches all the time. He is perfectly capable of getting upset when the situation is more than he can just roll off his shoulders. He can get sarcasting and whiny, and he's prone to fits of irrational and/or displaced anger. Being a higher blooded troll, it can be a lot harder for him to realize he's being stupid and calm down, especially in comparison to his human counter part. In most situations he'll feel bad and apologize afterward, especially if he got angry for a stupid reason.
Powers & Abilities:
He can play the piano like a boss.
As a blue blood troll he has some latent psychic abilities, mostly related to hypnotic suggestion. Such as showing someone a blank piece of paper and they'll think it's whatever he wants them to think it is. Rather empathic and can pick up on psychic impressions. It's stronger with touch and concentration but he doesn't like rooting around in other people's heads.
hammerkind: he hits things with hammers.
screwdriverkind: he pokes things with screwdrivers. particularly a sonic one he snagged from his neighbor durring afore mentioned shenanigans. Though he's mostly cluless about everything it's capable of doing as of yet.
Like everyone else in the universe, he has a sylladex inventory system.
Is currently in possession of the one and only prototype TARDEX, a supposedly living space ship and time machine. It utilizes Alternian sylladex and Dersite object duality technology, creating something similar to a TARDIS from Doctor Who. Though, rather than a police box, it's a big blue armoire that is still much larger on the inside, and uses a number of cardkeys that do various things depending on the combination. It has a number of rooms, including the bridge, mess hall, barracks, bathroom, and those are just the ones they're aware of.
There is a lot they still don't know about it, including the fact that the rooms can move around to make room for more rooms and Narnia. Some rooms can only be accessed via transportalizers, which of course go to different places depending on the room configuration. There's an alchimiter in there somewhere, which they will likely have no idea how to use at first whenever they do find it. It's overly complicated and a pain in the ass, just like any good sylladex would be. Ironically, a sylladex can be brought into the TARDEX and used without any problem, but the TARDEX may be the one thing a sylladex can't captchalogue. It isn't 'backwards compatible.'
